Mat Kane
During the three years that Mat Kane, 32, lived in China, he learned Mandarin Chinese, worked for a domestic travel agency and soaked in the culture, all the while collaborating with local musicians and bands such as the rock group Shazi, Kaiser Kuo of Tang Dynasty and Chinese rock legend Cui Jian. Mat also secured sponsorship and managed visiting bands for the 1998 Beijing International Jazz Festival, and performed with the funk band BJ Funky in 1999’s festival. Since moving to Brooklyn, Mat has focused on his music career, playing fiddle for the rock band the Trophy Wives, the cajun/country band the Doc Marshalls and the folk-rock band the Highway Sound.
Trey McCarver
Trey McArver, 27, currently lives in Wuhan, China where he runs and co-owns VOX Bar, one of the premier underground music venues in China. Trey has been living in China on and off since 2003, where he has played in several bands, toured China, and helped many other bands to tour China. He is fluent in Mandarin.
Brian Jacobs
Brian Jacobs, 26, lives in New York City where he writes and performs music with his band Apes & Androids. He co-owns VOX Bar in Wuhan with Trey McArver and Zhuning.
Zhu Ning
Zhu Ning is the heart and soul of the Chinese underground rock scene. He has played in some of the most important and influential punk bands in China such as ___ and ____. He founded and co-owns VOX Bar in Wuhan, where he manages and books for the club. He continues to perform and has several drum students.
